How Apple beat BlackBerry
Before the iPhone, Research in Motion’s BlackBerry owned the smartphone segment.  They did it by remarkably implementing the product that was remarkably envisioned by their founders, then pursuing enterprise sales as the strategy for achieving traction and phenomenal growth. Enter Apple. Apple took the incredible foresight of BlackBerry, and added consumer focus… and consumer focus is...

Facebook is taking over the internet. First the aggregation of our social activities on the web in one destination.  Then the invasion of almost every website through a Like button that centrally gathers preference data for hundreds of millions of users.  Now the upcoming release of a commenting system that any website can embed, bringing all of that comment data back to our FB profiles. These...

MSN Live Messenger suddenly stopped working on Mac...
I’ve been offline with MSN Messenger for over a week now. (It’s been a busy week, and there are so many other ways to keep in touch with people that I just haven’t bothered with it until now.) Apparently I’m not the only one with this problem. The solution, though, is as follows: There is an error with your current account history log. To fix the problem open...

– soxiam I had to reblog this because I think it’s a very accurate description of what I consider to be my unique style. It makes me happy that sox knows what I was going for, and I hope that I can still convince him to cash in some of his 300 hrs of unused vacation time to visit Portland! (via...

daumsoft: Daumsoft has found that Twitter saw a 3,400% increase in the monthly volume of Korean language tweets posted from January to December 2010 and its user base grew by 870% over the same period. In January 2010 Twitter users in Korea posted just 1.9 million tweets. By December the monthly volume…

Comparing two military superpowers
Despite China and America’s economic interdependence, there is substantial cause for concern regarding their military policies. For those who feel more comfortable with America being the world’s reigning military superpower, there may be some reassurance in America’s dominance on the list of absolute military spending.  America’s $680bn budget is six times larger than...

Wetoku's most frequent usage scenario is education
My previous startup, Wetoku, is being used for education more often than anything else. E-learning videos are far from generating the most video playbacks (on our site, or as embedded views), but there are more of these videos created than any other type at Wetoku. Interesting.

First 747 ever built is rusting away in Bundang,...
Over the course of the past year, I’ve unknowingly driven by the world’s first-ever commercial 747 airplane. It’s parked at the side of a small street in Bundang, a failed experiment as an aviation-themed restaurant. Someone needs to put this plane in a museum! I only found out that this plane was a part of history when I read this article in the Los Angeles Times.

@jemrlee: I'm at McDonalds, do you want something?
@davidyhlee: Yeah, a double quarter pounder with cheese.
@jemrlee: Ok, see you soon at the office. [hangs up]
@davidyhlee: Dammit, I'm going to regret this.

Does that make me a pacifist?
No. Ask anyone who knows me well, and they’ll tell you if someone hits me once, my first instinct is to hit back twice. Revenge is a dish best served cold… but cold dishes can still be delicious. Cold pizza. Cold ice cream. Cold cuts. I digress. But in the case of these wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, I can’t help but think that there must be a better way.  You don’t need...

Wikileaks is good, but is that relevant?
I, for one, am supportive of and sympathetic to Wikileaks’ stated objective of forcing transparency upon those that use unsavory, morally objectionable tactics and strategies. In this sense, Wikileaks is good. However, I make no qualms about abandoning abstract moral principles in exchange for saving someone’s life. If there is clear and imminent danger to the lives of people, we have...

I founded Disrupt.kr just under 2 months ago, with the objective of converting publishing companies’ content into immersive digital experiences. After all, content is no longer king — it’s the foundation.  People no longer pay for content, at least not in meaningful quantities.  What they pay for is experiences. Focus, we’re told, is essential. So after draining my bank...

Hair. Of which I have none. And thus, this post.
My friend @burning9 started a company recently with the founder & former CEO of Tatter and Company, which was acquired by Google Korea. I thought about him a few moments ago, so I pulled up his fledgling company’s website, then scrolled down to see THIS: I LOVE HIS HAIR! This company is a winner. It MUST be a winner, to be able to hire a Dude with hair like THIS. Jeongkyu Shin is...

Ahiku is hiring. Are you a great developer?
My friends over at Ahiku, who made Korea’s hit mobile video streaming service TwitOnAir, are hiring. But you’d better love cats. They’ve got a couple of ‘em roaming around their office in Hongdae, one of the hipper areas of Seoul where throngs of 20-somethings pack the streets and cafes. Ahiku’s CTO is @Jins, who works remotely from Australia. They develop using...

DADT Repealed, Cowardice in the Military Loses to...
Those who are given guns, missiles, tanks and airplanes (along with a license to kill) have tremendous power. One would hope that those we arm and expect to kill on our behalf be fair and good above all, and intelligent at all times. Certainly, one would expect that we not intentionally arm cowards. And yet the U.S. government has, for far too long, expected cowardice of its soldiers....

Of Google, Analysts, Indie Bookshops & Crack
c/o Jon Evans: A ridiculous amount of ado has been made about the eBookstore’s one innovative feature: they’re allowing independent bookstores to sell Google eBooks through their own web sites. I don’t know what it is about indie bookstores that makes otherwise hard-headed analysts go all misty-eyed and misty-minded, but anyone who thinks this is a game-changer is on crack.

Second car accident in 3 months.
My car got hit from behind, again. I had very special passengers in my car at the time! Fortunately, no one got hurt… and my car has no damage. I was stopped at a light behind another car, when someone decided to ram the BMW 5-series that was right behind me. It took a small hop forward and bumped me. Now I’m in the middle of a fight between two insurance companies.  I’ve...

Where's the great pizza in Korea?
So I finally ventured out to Costco in Yangjae-dong. It took me 30 minutes to get a parking spot, but the whole time I was thinking, “The pizza will be worth the wait.” Ummm, no. It was good, but not great. And they have no pepperoni pizza, just cheese pizza, combination pizza and bulgogi pizza.  I want a nice greasy-but-not-soggy pepperoni pizza. Someone, please, help me find a...

Less whining more fixing
People often whine when they feel pain, be it of the physical or psychological variety. Entrepreneurs create new value by addressing a problem with a solution instead of (just?) a complaint. Rape d'état
Wow, this is bad. Freedom to travel via air in the U.S. now involves making a choice between having a silhouette-slash-fuzzy-photo of our naked bodies photographed, or being raped-by-state in the form of a TSA agent probing our genitals with their fingers and palms. Via the Los Angeles Times: The new search technique used by the Transportation Security Administration allows airport security...
